Twilight Contemporary opens its doors with Food as Origin. An exhibition that brings together eleven incredibly exciting artists in an eclectic mix of styles and medium all grounded by a mutual fascination with food.
From the ‘Last Supper’ to Caravaggio’s scrupulous ‘Basket of Fruit,’ to ‘The Dinner Party,’ art’s unison with food has been long, varied, and often provocative. Cezanne, Monet, Warhol, and Frankfurt all wrote cookbooks, of sorts. And we can’t ignore the effect that the rise of cafe culture had in France, not least on the idea that life, food, and art might have something to do with each other. Manet’s 1873 painting, ‘Le Bon Bock’, of the owner at The Café Guerbois, certainly can’t go unmentioned, nor can Judy Chicago’s seminal sculptural installation ‘The Dinner Party’. Food, art, and life have a long intertwined tradition. This exhibition explores what artists today are making, and the role food and life play in their work. Food as Origin sees food as an envoy or starting point for artistic examination. You will notice the works investigate and challenge a wide range of themes and issues with an equally extensive set of styles and approaches.
Featuring paintings, sculptures, and moving image, the work will sometimes provoke or unnerve but at its core, and as a gallery, we ultimately demand one thing: for more seats to be at the dinner (drinks) table. Twilight Contemporary wants to create a space that champions unity and brings people together. Food as Origin showcases that.
For our private view, we are joining forces with Clingy Wrap, an artist-run ice cream company, and Farshare, a charity tackling hunger, and fighting food waste. In the United Kingdom, 7.2 million People (2022/23) live in food insecurity. 2% of art sales will go to Fareshare charity.
