What the Water Gave Them
Private view: 13th March 2025
Twilight Contemporary is thrilled to announce ‘What the Water Gave Them,’ an exhibition showcasing new paintings and animations by Cecilia Reeve that delve into themes of submersion, ritual, and renewal. At first glance, this collection exudes a serene and dreamlike quality, but a closer look reveals a darker narrative lurking beneath the surface. The recurring imagery of three legs, along with the symbolism of moths, snails, moons, and scissors, suggests that the three women are engaged in an occult-like ritual of rebirth.
Through these paintings and animations, viewers are invited to take part in the narrative’s unfolding, as the interplay of symbolism, body language, and archetypal characters fosters meaningful connections between the works. Entering the exhibition feels like stepping in the midst of a film, compelling visitors to intuitively grasp the evolving story. While the works are intricately linked, they lack a clear sequence, enhancing the sense of intrigue.
The phosphorescent swimming pool, hidden by foliage and lit by the moon gives a starting point to the narrative. The pool, a room below ground flooded by water serves as the stage for the unfolding scene. It reflects a familiar element of Hollywood cinema—an elastic space symbolizing both status and clarity, as well as the potential for darker, illicit activities. The paintings themselves adhere to cinematic framing conventions; reminiscent of film noir and suspense cinema, conveying an underlying tension and uncertainty. Faces are often partially obscured, and bodies cropped, leaving layers of abstraction for viewers to unpack.
At times it feels as though the viewer is being gently led downstream in a magical dreamworld yet the water also acts as a murky mirror of our reality, concealing hidden depths of mystery. In water, our weightless bodies drift out of sync with the outside world, creating a temporal shift that parallels the non-linear arrangement of the pieces. Submersion in water is a symbol of the unconscious allowing the audience to engage in this dreamlike narrative as they are drawn into this imagined scene, forging their own connections and interpretations.Reeve’s enchanting, instinctive use of color pulls you into a realm just beyond our grasp.
We are beyond excited to welcome you to Reeve’s debut solo exhibition.
