THE SPACE THAT LIES BETWEEN

THE SPACE THAT LIES BETWEEN
Until Saturday 3rd May
Twilight Contemporary is excited to present ‘The Space That Lies Between’, a figurative exploration of the self, our connections with others, and the nuanced space that lies between. This exhibition brings together 8 artists exploring the nuances of identity, connection, illness, and pleasure, revealing how the spaces between individuals - both physical and emotional - hold vast power in shaping who we are.
‘The Space That Lies Between’ examines the moments of tension, vulnerability, and intimacy that surface in the interactions we have with those around us. The works traverse a spectrum of moments or scenes—whether familial, provocative or societal - exploring the beauty, discomfort, and ambiguity that can emerge when boundaries intertwine.
Each artist approaches the notion of the space in between from a unique angle, using the human form as a vehicle to investigate themes of connection, fragmentation, and transformation. These artworks offer a dialogue between the interior and exterior worlds - the self and the other - inviting viewers to reflect on how the spaces we occupy, both physically and metaphorically, define the contours of our emotional lives.
In these works, the body is not only a representation of the self but also a site of encounter and exchange. Figures stretch, bend, and intertwine, embodying both the desire for closeness and the tension of distance. These artworks challenge the notion of static identity, suggesting that we are ever-shifting, constantly negotiating the spaces between connection and disconnection, intimacy and solitude.
Sometimes provocative, sometimes tender, the works in this show push our own perceptions of self, offering a visceral exploration of the internal and external forces that define us. At times the works delve into social and interpersonal relationships, often using irony and humour as tools to both dissect and illuminate the complexities of human connection. Wit and playfulness in the work seemingly challenge traditional narratives around intimacy, tension, and communication, revealing the absurdity and poignancy that often lie beneath the surface of our interactions.
You will notice that ‘The Space That Lies Between’ encourages us to question how we relate to one another and the world around us. What happens when we are in the space between - between words, between gestures, between moments? While this exhibition sometimes includes vivid portrayals of family, the body, illness, and pleasure, it is in the moments in-between- those quiet, undefined moments- that we discover something new and exciting.
In essence, this exhibition aims to draw attention to the invisible threads that connect us, and the delicate spaces that define our relationships. In examining these interstitial spaces, via the vehicle of the human form, we are reminded that the space between is never empty, but rather, full of possibilities, tension, and the potential for transformation.
