Twilight Contemporary is excited to present Formed in Repetition, the debut solo exhibition of Yorkshire-based sculptor William Braithwaite, which explores the tension and connections between sculpture and architecture.
There is a duality in this exploration. In one sense, Braithwaite’s steel and concrete sculptures engage with architecture- specifically the principles of repetition and minimalism seen in Modernist and Brutalist design. In another, Braithwaite examines the transformative effects his works have on the architecture they inhabit.
Braithwaite’s geometric sculptures rise out of the exhibition space to form bodily interactions with the viewer. As the audience, you cannot avoid the sheer sense of weight and power in the materiality of the works, while being simultaneously drawn into the nuances and formation of the walls and ceilings. The muted palettes add a subtlety to his works, with the tonal grey also enhancing the surrounding environment and further deepening the dialogue between sculpture and architecture.
There is a dichotomy between the simplicity of the vertical forms and the intricate geometric, stepped details that speak to a lineage of modernist architectural design theory. A lineage Braithwaite’s ‘Formed in Repetition’ looks to both examine and expand.
