Twilight Contemporary is excited to announce our participation in this year’s SWAB Barcelona (8-11th October) in the MyFAF section. We will present a duo exhibition exploring world building as an act of resistance featuring the work of Kitty McKay and William Reinsch.
McKay’s reimagined and manipulated urban re-constructions draw attention to the exclusionary structures embedded within public space. While Reinsch’s imagined rural landscapes form part of a wider world building exercise, allowing him to process and communicate experiences not easily put into words. Butted together, these urban and rural reimaginings stage a sinister cognitive dissonance between these two modes of world building. They ask the audience to re-evaluate normative perspectives on disability and mental health.
In its nineteenth edition, Swab places at the centre of its programme the construction of community and the creation of shared value around art. This purpose shapes its role as a meeting point for artistic practices that question the conditions under which they are produced and circulated. In this sense, the fair extends beyond the exhibition space, fostering relationships through an expanded programme. MyFaF is a program designed to support young galleries and emerging voices, giving them a stand free-of-charge supported by the Swab Foundation to experiment and exhibit their artists. Kitty McKay:
McKay, a Glasgow-based artist and researcher, is eternally preoccupied with the ways in which public space is made and unmade. Working across installation, moving image, sculpture, sound, collage, and writing, their approach to practice is informed by feminist, queer, and crip frameworks for understanding, and overcoming, the ways power constructs place. Their installations seek to evoke the errant, dissonant, and unauthorised socialities and practices that happen in urban space through the dislocation of materials that comprise and enforce spatial hegemony.

William Reinsch:
Reinsch, born in 1994, is a London-based artist.
Naked Island is the name given to the world he has been building over many years, drawn from his internal psyche. A world that offers glimpses and fragments into a place normally kept hidden.
Reinsch began painting in this autobiographical mode after a tough period in his young life. Drawing and painting became a vehicle to communicate experiences he could not easily put into words, with early works given to his therapist as a means of understanding what he was experiencing. This approach has never left his practice, with each piece becoming a new act of exposure.
Materiality plays a critical role in his work. Reinsch frequently works on aluminium, allowing paint to slide and fracture across the surface, producing very gestural marks. The relative passivity of aluminium enables speed and instinct, whereas his canvas works introduce a sense of resistance.
