Twilight Contemporary is pleased to present 食之不蛊· Shi Zhi Bu Gu (Immune to Sorcery), a new exhibition by Lin Hongjing hosted at Godet. The presentation forms part of an ongoing collaboration between Twilight Contemporary and Godet, exploring how contemporary art can exist beyond the gallery.
Borrowing its title from the Shan Hai Jing, an ancient Chinese text that tells the story of those who eat the flesh of the nine-tailed fox to become immune to sorcery. The works on display explore the rituals embedded in everyday life, across the exhibition, you will notice a focus on the close-up details: hands holding cards, feet in lace stockings, a figure on a sofa, or the act of drinking tea. These familiar moments take on a mysterious quality when you realise that the body, or the figure, is never fully revealed. Props and symbols shift from a presentation of the ordinary into weighted signs drawn from ancient stories.
The idea of consuming something to resist sorcery finds a natural echo in the setting of a wine bar, where acts of sharing and drinking can often take on their own ritualistic qualities. It is an absolute pleasure to present Lin Hongjing’s work at Godet.
