Chair I

18/12/25 - 20/12/25

Twilight Contemporary is delighted to announce the launch of Twilight Interiors - an interior design studio working hand in hand with the gallery to bring the language of contemporary art into the home.
We’ll be working  with contemporary artists to reimagine and transform everyday interior objects, with a mission to create truly unique collectables. Every three months we will present a new exhibition of these works at Twilight Contemporary.
We begin with Chair I, in which sixteen artists reinterpret the iconic Bentwood chair.
The chair holds a seminal place in art history - from Joseph Kosuth’s foundational conceptual work One and Three Chairs, to Vincent van Gogh’s painted portraits of unoccupied seats, and Ai Weiwei’s Marble Chair Series, a critique of cultural heritage and political control. Reimagining the chair is not new: Marcel Duchamp famously mounted a bicycle wheel on a wooden stool in his 1913 Bicycle Wheel, while Sarah Lucas transformed chairs into plinths for her sculptures made from stuffed tights, challenging conventions of gender and sexuality.
In design history too, the chair has often been a site for seismic paradigm shifts from the Bauhaus’ radical modernist rethinking of form and function with the cantilever, to postmodern experiments that blurred utility and art.
For us, Chair I  represents both a bridge to Twilight Contemporary and a point of departure for Twilight Interiors.  An object that sits between the realms of art and design, between the functional and the symbolic,  between object and relic.
