Zoe MacCormack (b. 1999) is a London-based artist who creates surreal worlds in which comfort and disquiet are inextricably knotted together. For MacCormack, the act of painting is a form of emotional unburdening. Each work is a purging, or excavation, of the troubling and mystifying elements of the subconscious. In many of MacCormack’s works, forlorn, ghostly figures emerge from otherworldly landscapes which seem to warp and bend as if following the strange, internal logic of sleep. At points, MacCormack uses rapid, gestural brushstrokes to create maelstroms of texture; often hypnotic and bewildering in their intensity. Elsewhere, MacCormack layers on hushed, whispery veils of paint to create quiet, hidden sanctums within the canvas. MacCormack’s work constantly oscillates between moments of chaos and serenity to highlight the essential symbiosis of the two states.
