Dreaming Room, 2023, acrylic and oil on canvas, 80 x 60 cm
Tommy Camerno is a British artist based in London. His work engages with structures in architecture as theatrically symbolic and asks how desires are built. He practices psychogeography, observing the impacts of city life and the liminal space between history and mythology. His studio oscillates between painting and sculpture where objects become surfaces and pictorial motifs become structures holding sedimentary narratives of desire, intimacy, and camouflage.
Inspired by the idea of the material unconscious, his work looks at how the culture we are surrounded by, both in urban space and media, programs our psychology and desires. He often makes facsimiles of historically preserved details that survive within globalised, post-modern environments. These works involve contemporary processes and materials like CNC cutting, uv printing, spray paint, and machined components entangled through improvised installations.
Recently his work has been exhibited at Sarah Kravitz, London, 2024, Hypha HQ, London 2024, Filet, London, 2024, Soka Art, Beijing, 2023, Nicola Pedana Gallery, Caserta, 2023, Sid Motion, London, 2022, Kupfer, London, 2022 and his first UK solo show at Flatland Projects in Bexhill, 2023. He received a masters in painting from the Royal College of Art in 2022 and was subsequently a finalist for the Ingram Prize. In 2023 he was a resident at Good Eye Projects in London.
