Hosted by Candid Crit & Tabitha Gammer
Candid crits are artist-led sessions providing a welcoming space for discussing work in progress. Aimed at anyone making figurative art, this event invites participants to explore their creative practice in the wider context of visual culture.
What is it?
Crits are opportunities to be inspired, share ideas and receive feedback as well as connect with other artists. Conversations could centre around intention, process and the unexpected discoveries that emerge through making. Commentary is guided by careful looking and collective curiosity rather than judgement. By asking questions about your own art and others’ you will gain a new perspective on your work.
Background
What are we concealing/revealing in depicting ourselves? Do unposed snapshots help us see someone clearer, or does a direct portrait do more to show their emotions, thoughts and energy? How can we capture interactions and preserve them through art? Whether in a single image or a thousand frame film, the relationship between subject and maker stands out, creating a space in the world reserved for them.
Through her research, documented on Instagram, Tabitha studies this space. Group crits provide another avenue for asking the question: what can we tell about a person through their likeness, and what does their likeness tell us about the artist?

Sessions are facilitated by Tabitha Gammer and last two hours. You're welcome to bring work in any medium and at any stage of development – please bring a laptop or tablet if you’re planning on sharing digital images, video or sound recordings.
Capacity is limited so everyone has a chance to share and receive feedback. There’s also a small number of tickets available if you don’t have anything to share but would like to come and join the discussion.
