Hecate was the Greek goddess associated with Witchcraft, amongst other things, and her characteristics can be seen as acting as the precursor for how we portray witches in popular culture today: Hecate is shown with 3 faces designating different traits, evil spirits of the night, having limerence between the two worlds (good /evil, dead / undead), magic, a lot of evil women having dogs by their side, the iconography of snakes, and so much more.
