Sofia Bjurström is a Swedish artist whose evocative, blurred charcoal drawings explore memory, movement, and impermanence. Working predominantly on paper, and depicting dancers, Bjurström’s practice captures moments on the verge of vanishing, offering a poetic meditation on the instability of memory and the beauty of the fleeting.
Her work has been shown widely across Europe and the U.S., including exhibitions such ‘Shadows of Glass’ at Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica and ‘Time stays for our stories’ solo show at Tönnheim Gallery in Madrid.
In her latest series of charcoal drawings she attempts to create a space where time is
deliberately left outside each image, allowing the viewer to step into a moment suspended in
eternity.

"I believe that by removing the constraints of time, I can focus on the fleeting nature of
memory itself—its fragile quality that evokes longing and introspection.
Each piece invites viewers to inhabit a timeless realm where movement, dance, and
performance exist beyond chronology. Her figurative forms and the interplay of light
and shadow are expressions of her desire to depict the ephemeral and intangible aspects of
memory, emphasizing that these moments are more about feeling than about precise
representation. Bjurström sees her work as a way to explore the universal human
experience of holding onto personal memories while longing for the future and emphasizes
that each piece aims to exclude the concept of time, forming a pure space for reflection. For
her, art becomes a way to transcend life's impermanence, capturing the beauty and wonder
of existence in fragile, timeless moments beyond the relentless march of time."
